Incident Reporting

Incident is an event which is not part of the standard operation which causes or may cause disruption in the functioning or business. A security breach can lead to a security incident involving loss of life or property. An incident report is a proper recording of the realities identified with an incident. The report may relate to any unusual event on a worksite, but would normally identify with a accident or injury that has occurred. In a perfect world, the incident report should be finished as soon as possible following the injury. Depending on the severity of the incident, the report may be used solely by the company for future safety planning, or it may go to insurers, the overseeing regulatory body or the police.

Categories of Security Incident : Security incident can be categorized as under:-

  • Security incident
  • Safety incident

Security Incident :-

  • Against premises : trespass, unauthorized entry, breaking into house etc.
  • Against property : pilferage, theft, robbery, arson, vandalism, shoplifting etc.
  • Against life : assault, injury, attempt to murder, murder, suicide etc.
  • Against public order : loitering, lettering, eve-teasing, crowd formation, aggressive & abusive behavior etc.

Safety Incident :-

  • Due to accidents and mishaps.
  • Due to failure and breakages of appliances and equipment.

Example of Safety Incident :-

  • Electric shock : An electric shock occurs when human or animal body comes in direct contact with any unprotected electric source. It leads to electrocution. If a security guard notices any loose wire or sparking in the premises, he should report the matter to the maintenance staff immediately.
  • Incident Reporting : reporting about the incident by a security guard follows following procedure :-
  1. Reporting immediately to seniors and emergency services by using available means of communication.
  2. Raising of alarm if it is serious like fire incident.
  3. Marking entry in the incident register and submitting a detailed incident report as per organizations format.

Security Guard and Investigation Process : A security guard who was present at the location and time of incident, should assist his superiors in the preparation of detailed incident report. A guard should be ensure the following :-

  • Make personal notes about the incident, such as location, time, cause etc and assist the security supervisor with this information.
  • Preserve evidence which may be useful during the investigation.
  • Provide the names of witness, if known.
  • Narrate the sequence of events to the investigations.

Incident Manager : An incident manager is a person who is detailed for dealing with safety aspect and emergencies of a premises. Incident manager coordinates all the efforts regarding the management of an incident, such as rescue, first aid, evacuation of people, firefighting etc.
